OUR STORY
Bella Coola Beef was founded by members of two families in British Columbias pristine Bella Coola Valley who have been ranching since the 1930s. We are a family run operation -- small enough to intimately care for our land and our animals, but sophisticated enough to bring a superior product to market with qualities unmatched by many larger operations.

We believe we live in the best grass-fed beef producing area in the world. Our cattle are raised in an area of rugged wilderness, hundreds of miles from any metropolitan city. The air and water do not get any cleaner, and the high soil mineral levels of our mountain and valley pastures grow grass like nowhere else, resulting in a uniquely flavorful beef. We feed our cattle nothing but green grass and grass/alfalfa hay. We are truly 100% grass-fed and grass-finished, providing you with the many health benefits documented from grass-fed beef.

WHY GRASS-FED BEEF?
-Grass-fed beef is higher in heart and brain-healthy omega-3 fatty acids, beta-carotene, vitamins A and E, and CLAs, which research has proven can reduce heart disease and cancer risks.
-Grass-fed beef is lower in total fat than grain-fed beef.
-By not eating grain, grass-fed animals maintain a digestive system less susceptible to the E. coli bacteria.
-Grass-fed beef, also referred to as pasture-raised or pasture-grown beef, reflects how nature intended for cattle to be raised.

SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE and ANIMAL WELFARE

-Our goal is to produce the highest-quality beef in a humane fashion while maintaining a delicately balance eco-system that is neither over-foraged nor over- grazed.

Our herd has access to vast open areas. The animals are never confined or crowded together in pens or feedlots. In the summer time, they roam the alpine meadows, where there is a density of one animal per 500 acres! From June through October, the cattle live in Johnny's Meadow, an extremely remote pasture (five miles from the nearest road and 250 miles from the nearest traffic light!) that can only be accessed on foot or horseback. With no fences, they roam free, grazing on the native grasses in the meadow and drinking from the nearby creeks while breeding to have their calves for the next spring. This is about as pure an environment as you can get.

In the winter months, the cattle return to the Valley, where there is still only one animal per five acres. By rotating pastures, the animals never over-graze and are able integrate with their environment, continuing a cycle of renewed growth that makes for stress-free cattle and a sustainable eco-system that stays in balance.

Our goal in fostering this humane lifestyle is to raise healthy cattle. We will sell no beef that has been treated by chemicals of any kind, including antibiotics and growth hormones. We also do not brand our cattle, since we believe it is worth the occasional theft by cattle rustlers to avoid subjecting the animals to this stressful act.

ANIMAL PROCESSING
Bella Coola Beef is processed in a small, family-owned, USDA-inspected facility, where it is prepared by hand into perfectly presented cuts of beef. We take the time to process each animal individually so our pure ground beef is never mixed from different animals and contains no additives and no fillers. Cattle are between 18 and 24 months old when they are ready for butchering, which results in the highest quality beef.

Why dry-aged? The process of dry-aging, while very expensive, produces unparalleled flavor and tenderness. Dry-aged beef is extremely rare, available only in the very best restaurants and gourmet butcher shops. Our beef is dry-aged for 14 days before packaging.
